A path has opened to test temple and Korean medicine booking tools in the field
With connections to temple and Korean medicine tourism sites and KRW 100 million in total testing support, Seoul is enabling companies less than seven years old with a Seoul presence to test services that reduce international visitors’ friction in finding information, booking, and communicating.

Seoul is taking on part of the cost of field testing
The Seoul Metropolitan Government has chosen temple and Korean medicine tourism as the testing areas for its 2026 Tourism Startup Co-Prosperity Cooperation Programme. Selected companies will develop their services with either the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism (대한불교조계종), Korea’s largest Buddhist order, or the Seoul Association of Korean Medicine (서울특별시한의사회), an association of Korean medicine practitioners, then let international visitors use them at real tourism sites. Field testing here does not mean rolling out a finished product nationwide. It means first checking whether a small feature is actually used.
The change is backed by KRW 100 million in total field-testing funds. Seoul will support the final selected startups with proof-of-concept (PoC) testing funding worth KRW 100 million in total. The published guidance does not establish the amount available to each company or any required company contribution.
Applications close at 5 p.m. on September 9, 2026. Eligible companies must have at least one headquarters, branch, office, research institute, or factory in Seoul and must have been established within seven years as of the deadline. A presentation evaluation and in-depth interview are scheduled for September 17 after document screening.
There are already guests to test with. According to the Korean Buddhist Cultural Corps (한국불교문화사업단), the organisation that runs the Temple Stay programme, Temple Stay had 349,236 participants in 2025, including 55,515 international participants. That is more than double the 26,587 international participants in 2022, although these figures cover all of Korea, not Seoul alone.
Korean medicine should be viewed at a smaller scale. Material is emerging that can be used to observe visitor flows at a single institution, including a study that reviewed 2024 records for 318 international patients at Tongin Korean Medicine Clinic in Seoul.
Follow one booking from start to finish, and the product becomes clearer
Imagine one staff member handling international Temple Stay bookings at a Seoul temple. The following is a representative scenario for understanding the site; actual procedures need to be confirmed with each participating temple. The staff member reads inquiries in foreign languages, checks remaining places, and explains rules on clothing, meals, and arrival times.
Once a booking is confirmed, they copy the inquiry into an internal booking sheet and rewrite the confirmation in the visitor’s language. The day before the visit, they answer messages asking for directions. On the day, they explain the worship location and conduct rules again to people who arrive late. If a cancellation or dietary change occurs, they update the same information in several places.
The first product does not need to be a new nationwide booking network. When an existing booking arrives, it could be a tool that creates and sends a single visitor-language page with the confirmation, directions, packing list, and schedule. At the site, the visitor shows the page’s square scan code and a staff member marks them as arrived.
Once testing begins, staff do not have to translate the same explanations from scratch every time. Visitors can check their schedule and rules before arriving, and receive updated guidance on the same screen if something changes. Operators can record at which stages questions and cancellations occur most often.
The flow for Korean medicine experiences is similar, but the information requires more care. It can start by collecting the purpose of the visit and the visitor’s language in advance, then connecting the booking time, any interpretation need, and post-visit guidance. In an initial test, it is safer to limit the product to accurately conveying guidance written by medical professionals, rather than having it make diagnoses or assess treatment effects.
Some work clearly remains with people. A temple must approve religious explanations and etiquette standards, while medical professionals must make Korean medicine clinical judgments and explanations. Even when a translation sounds natural, the responsible staff member needs to make the final check on cultural meaning, allergy guidance, and health-related wording.
Success criteria do not need to be grand. Compare staff time from booking inquiry to completed visit, the number of repeated questions, the number of visitors who arrive at the wrong place, and cancellation reasons before and after the test. Even if a test starts in one site and one language, a clear reduction in two of these four measures provides grounds to expand to another site.
Elsewhere, operators changed one part of the booking journey first
The Koyasan Shukubo Association opened an official website in March 2025 for jointly finding and booking temple lodging in Koyasan, Japan. Visitors can view conditions such as accommodation, temple cuisine, and early-morning worship, then book directly or submit their preferences to receive a recommendation from the association. The association connects properties that find online sales difficult.
The association was established jointly by 51 temple lodging facilities in Koyasan. In June 2026, it added six temples available for direct booking. In June 2026, it added six temples eligible for immediate booking.
GoWabi in Thailand is a service for comparing traditional Thai massage and spa offerings by time, price, and reviews, then buying electronic vouchers. Visitors show a booking number or scan code on site, while businesses manage bookings on a separate screen. Customers do not pay a separate booking fee; businesses pay a commission when a booking occurs.
GoWabi says it has more than 8,000 listed businesses, more than 1 million monthly visits, and more than 1 million user reviews. All of these are company claims and need independent verification. Still, its choice to turn massage and experiences, which are easier to standardise than medical care, into bookable products is useful to examine. Korean medicine tourism in Seoul could also begin with experience bookings and visit guidance rather than attempting to cover an entire course of treatment from the start.
The Book of Kells Experience at Trinity College Dublin in Ireland introduced timed-entry tickets and mobile phone entry verification. It also lets visitors add a campus walking tour to a standard admission ticket. Booking became more than information delivery: it became a way to spread crowds and connect an additional experience.
TicketSolve, a booking-system provider, said the share of online bookings rose from 30% in 2019 to more than 83% in 2024, and that 22% of sold tickets were bundled with walking tours. These figures come from a customer case study published by the provider and need independent verification. Even so, they show a concrete structure: after booking a temple visit time, add meditation, temple cuisine, or local interpretation.
Four things that can be tested now
1. Temple visit confirmation for international visitors
- A service that takes existing booking information and organises the schedule, packing list, clothing, and directions into one page in the visitor’s language.
- It is for Seoul Temple Stay temples where one or two staff members handle international inquiries.
- Support for site connections and translation and operations testing costs makes it possible to validate the service at one temple without building a nationwide booking network.
- The first screen shows today’s arriving visitors, their languages, whether the confirmation has been sent, and questions that have not yet been answered.
2. Temple interpretation question log
- When a visitor scans a code on site, they can hear approved multilingual interpretation and leave further questions.
- It is for temples that cannot keep foreign-language interpreters on staff at all times, and for independent international travellers.
- Rather than letting artificial intelligence generate religious explanations on its own, there is now a setting in which the tool can be tested within content approved by the temple.
- The first screen shows interpretation for the current location, playback language, frequently asked questions, and an Ask a staff member button.
3. Before-and-after guidance inbox for Korean medicine experiences
- A service that sends pre-visit preparation details and booking times, then delivers lifestyle guidance written by the institution and the next schedule after the experience.
- It is for Seoul Korean medicine clinics and Korean medicine experience facilities that are beginning to serve international visitors.
- A collaboration site with the Seoul Association of Korean Medicine can be used to check, on a small scale, whether interpretation needs and guidance omissions are handled.
- The first screen contains only four fields: purpose of visit, language, booking time, and whether interpretation is needed.
4. Timed bookings connected to neighbourhood routes
- A service that shows open time slots for a temple or Korean medicine experience, then groups nearby restaurants, markets, and workshops into short routes before or after the visit.
- It is for site operators who want to spread periods when groups concentrate and extend visits to nearby shops.
- Because it can verify actual visitor arrival times and travel outcomes, it can establish usefulness faster than a simple recommendation list.
- The first screen shows remaining morning and afternoon slots, plus three routes lasting 30 minutes, one hour, and two hours after the experience.
What to check today
Call the programme operator, Tap Angel Partners (탭엔젤파트너스), and ask whether a proposal to test just one stage of the booking flow at one individual temple or Korean medicine clinic is eligible for review. If, within 30 minutes, you can confirm that a one-site, one-feature proposal is possible and explain how the site contact would be arranged and what result you would measure, it is worth pursuing. If you must integrate booking systems across several institutions from the start, reduce the idea to a smaller feature such as confirmations or post-visit guidance.
Why this matters where you are
The useful change is not a national booking platform. It is the availability of a real operating site, real visitors, and funding to test one narrow point of friction in booking or visitor guidance. Check whether cultural venues, experience providers, or healthcare-adjacent operators in your market can approve content, provide a test setting, and measure the same operational outcomes before you build a larger system.
