An Operations Service That Connects Local Bookstore Orders to Pickup
As smart devices reach local bookstores, there is room for small paid services that connect the order, delivery, pickup, and institutional supply work now split across paper, messaging apps, spreadsheets, and checkout terminals.

Devices arrive, but operations do not connect themselves
Korea’s 2026 Smart Device Support Project for Local Bookstores provides one device each to about 280 local bookstores. Applications closed on August 26. The Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, the national ministry responsible for culture policy, oversees the project, and the Korean Booksellers Association (한국서점연합회) carries it out. Its goal is to digitise local bookstores and create models for smart bookstores. Supported devices include point-of-sale (POS) systems for sales and inventory management, information displays, and unattended book lockers.
The available devices are 80 portable work terminals, 30 checkout terminals that record sales and inventory together, 100 electronic information screens, 20 unattended book lockers, and 50 self-service payment machines. The maximum national-government subsidy ranges from KRW 700,000 to KRW 3 million, depending on the device. Each bookstore can receive only one device of one type, so this is not a programme that changes an entire store operation at once.
The national subsidy covers up to 90% of the supply price, but bookstores pay the remaining 10% and the full value-added tax. Monthly fees, repair costs, maintenance fees, and consumables are not covered. In other words, recurring costs after the support period, including monthly and maintenance fees, remain the bookstore’s responsibility.
In the 2024 Local Bookstore Survey, 83.3% of 1,809 responding bookstores had one or two workers. The average store was about 30 pyeong, a Korean unit of floor area, received 35.6 visitors a day, and nearly half had annual sales below KRW 100 million. Most are small enough that one or two people handle customers, purchasing, deliveries, returns, and events.
Use of checkout terminals that manage sales and inventory together was 58.3%. Roughly four in ten stores may still use other records, such as paper ledgers or spreadsheets, alongside them. If a new device does not connect a customer’s order details, the books that actually arrive, and pickup notices, it only adds another screen to check.
One order for Mr. Kim passes through five places
Consider Mr. Kim, who runs a neighbourhood bookstore close to the average size, with one employee and a 30-pyeong store. When a customer orders an unavailable book by phone or messaging app, he writes down the title, name, and contact details on paper. He then enters the book in a wholesale ordering screen, moves the reservation to a spreadsheet, and records it again in the checkout terminal if the customer has prepaid.
Even when the wholesale ordering screen says a book is available to order, the actual shipment and arrival dates are not confirmed. Mr. Kim reopens the ordering screen to check whether it has shipped, then compares the delivered box with the paper reservation list. He sends the customer a text message when the book arrives and contacts them again if they do not collect it after several days.
An unattended book locker allows books to be handed over outside business hours, but it adds another task. Someone must record which order goes in which compartment, send the customer a password and storage deadline, and remove uncollected books. If the customer name in the spreadsheet differs from the locker record, the wrong person could receive an instruction.
School and library orders are even more fragmented. In 2026, Daegu Seonghwa Middle School’s book purchase required delivery of 604 copies across 418 titles within 15 days of contract signing, as well as entry into the school-library record system and on-site installation. This was not simply packing multiple copies of a title. It required checking editions and quantities across hundreds of titles, while continuously recording omissions, out-of-stock items, and exchanges.
If Mr. Kim re-enters the list file received from a school into the wholesale ordering screen, asks the teacher about out-of-stock books by email, and moves confirmed quantities into a quotation again, the same book information exists in multiple places. This is where errors happen: ordering from an old file after the list changes, or including books that have not arrived in the delivery note. Devices can make scanning and payment faster, but they do not determine which record is current.
A service that connects these steps could show one customer order as a sequence: received, ordered, awaiting shipment, arrived, ready for pickup, and complete. When a book’s barcode is scanned with a portable device upon arrival, the reserved customer appears, and one button sends an arrival notice and locker number. If direct integration with an existing checkout terminal is difficult, the service could start by importing sales and inventory files.
Some work clearly remains human. Bookstore staff must choose an alternative edition for an unavailable title, explain an uncertain arrival date to a customer, and find incorrect books in a school list. The service should not replace judgement. Its job is to eliminate repeatedly copying the same information and show who needs an answer now.
Canada, Germany, and Australia connected the broken point first
Canada’s Bookmanager connects the process from the moment an independent bookstore orders an unavailable book for a customer. When a customer order is created in its sales and inventory software, the system identifies the customer when the book arrives and sends an email or text message about arrival and in-store pickup. Bookstores pay for the software, annual maintenance, and online ordering features.
Bookmanager handles both special orders placed in store and online orders. If a book is in store, it is accepted as a pickup order; if not, it moves to a customer order or an incoming-stock queue. Online orders and in-store special orders can be handled in the same system.
Germany’s independent bookstore Buchhandlung Bornhofen has operated a three-compartment pickup locker at its entrance since July 2022. Staff place the ordered books and invoice inside, then send the customer a four-digit number. The customer can collect the books regardless of day or time. The store does not state a separate pickup fee and charges for the ordered books.
This case began not with a large unattended store but with one task: pickup after business hours. By managing whose books were in each of three compartments and delivering a code, it created 24-hour pickup. Korean bookstores with one or two workers could also test demand with fewer compartments before installing a large locker.
Australia’s Booklists.com.au lets local bookstores and stationery shops receive online school-supply lists by school and year level. It collects parent orders and payments, then produces required inventory quantities, picking lists, and packing labels. It appears to be a model with implementation investment required from each seller.
In customer testimonials published by the company, one seller said the service reduced time spent making handwritten inventory-order lists by about 30 hours and brought average order-entry time to about 90 seconds. Another seller said order-entry time was cut in half. These are testimonials collected by the service company, so the figures need independent verification, but the direction is clear: connect school lists through ordering, purchasing, and packing.
Four small services that could be sold separately
1. Reservation order relay
- What it does: Connects orders received by phone or messaging app through purchasing, arrival, notification, and completed pickup in one continuous flow.
- Who uses it: A neighbourhood bookstore with one or two workers that uses a paper reservation book and spreadsheets while directly ordering customer requests.
- Why now: More portable work terminals and sales-and-inventory terminals do not automatically connect customer reservation information.
- First screen: Shows today’s arrived orders, customers who have not been notified, and orders past their promised date, in that order.
2. Unattended locker assignment and notification
- What it does: Assigns an empty locker compartment to each order and sends the password, pickup location, storage deadline, and uncollected-item alerts.
- Who uses it: A one- or two-person bookstore that has installed an unattended book locker outside its building but cannot staff the store into the night.
- Why now: A store may receive support for buying a locker, but recurring work to assign compartments and guide customers remains with the store.
- First screen: Divides locker compartments into three states—empty, awaiting pickup, and overdue—and shows the customer and remaining time for each one.
3. School and library order workspace
- What it does: Receives book lists sent by schools, checks editions and quantities, and manages purchasing, out-of-stock queries, arrivals, packing, and delivery status together.
- Who uses it: A locally certified bookstore that has begun supplying schools or small libraries but handles lists of hundreds of titles through spreadsheets and email.
- Why now: Even where local bookstores have priority-purchasing opportunities, they will struggle to compete with online suppliers if they cannot manage list checks, school-library record entry, and exchanges.
- First screen: Pulls forward only titles with an edition mismatch, out-of-stock titles, and titles that have not yet arrived.
4. Event registration and electronic information-screen bundle
- What it does: Manages reading-group and author-event registration, participation fees, included books, on-site attendance, and the store’s information screen in one place.
- Who uses it: A neighbourhood bookstore that runs a book talk or reading group about once a month, while separately managing registrations through online forms, payments through bank transfer, and promotional displays.
- Why now: Even as support for electronic information screens grows, staff must keep reconciling capacity and required book quantities by hand if event lists and book orders remain separate.
- First screen: Places, on a calendar, each event’s registration count, payment status, required book quantity, and the content currently displayed on the information screen.
Why this matters where you are
Korea’s device subsidy is a Korean condition: it helps stores acquire hardware but does not cover recurring operating costs. In your own market, check whether small retailers have similar gaps between the systems they already use and the steps staff still copy by hand. A useful first product may be a narrow connection between two records, rather than a replacement for every system in the store.
Follow one order today
Call one local bookstore and ask staff to describe, step by step, how they handled one recent reservation order from receipt through pickup. If the customer name and book title pass through three or more places—paper, messaging app, spreadsheet, and ordering screen—and the same information is copied more than once, the service may be worth building first for just one of those handoffs.
