You Can Build a Neighborhood Map of Community Childcare Center Availability
By narrowing nationwide community childcare center data to a single district and adding brief confirmations from centers, you can build a service that helps parents find likely care options before making a round of phone calls.

You can see capacity and enrollment, not just center names
The National Community Childcare Center Standard Data set (전국지역아동센터표준데이터) on the Public Data Portal (공공데이터포털) brings together information on centers managed by local governments. The version updated on October 26, 2026 includes center names, addresses, coordinates, phone numbers, and operating organization types.
You can also see each center’s capacity, current number of enrolled children, and staff count. This goes beyond placing locations on a map: it makes it possible to compare how many children each center is caring for.
For example, the Dream Care Community Childcare Center in Jinan County, North Jeolla Province is listed on the Public Data Portal with a capacity of 29 children, current enrollment of 26, and three staff members. The numbers may suggest that three places remain, but current enrollment is only the registered count as of August 14, 2026. It does not mean there are places available to apply for now.
The nationwide data is listed as updated annually, but records submitted by local governments may be consolidated at the start of each month, and each center can have a different data reference date. One center on the same screen may reflect August conditions while another reflects September, so a service should not hide those dates.
According to the 2024 status report compiled by the National Center for the Rights of the Child (국가아동권리보장원), Korea had 4,206 community childcare centers serving 119,875 children. That works out to roughly 28 children per center, so accurately guiding a family to a few options near home and school can be more useful than a nationwide ranking.
Covering one Mapo-gu neighborhood can reduce parents’ calls
Consider a guardian raising a second-grade child in Mapo-gu, Seoul, and commuting to Yeouido. After finding nearby centers on a map, this person may need to call each one to ask about operating hours, waiting lists, school-break operations, and how children get home.
The first center may be full. The second may have space but not match the child’s dismissal time. A third may not run a school shuttle, meaning a grandparent would need to pick up the child. These differences need separate confirmation.
The first service does not need to be a nationwide real-time booking network. It can start by mapping only Mapo-gu centers, showing capacity, enrollment, staff count, and the data reference date, then classifying actual recruitment status as “recruiting,” “waitlist open,” or “call to confirm.”
A guardian enters their home or school and sees centers within walking distance first. Selecting a center leads to the public capacity and enrollment data, the last confirmation date, operating hours, school-break care, whether return-home support is available, and a call button.
Send each center a short confirmation link by text once a week. Staff only need to select their current status and expected openings next month. Centers that have not responded for a long time can be marked “not recently confirmed.”
Narrowing the service to one district reduces the number of centers, making it easier to explain the service directly to operators and correct inaccurate information. Parents’ common questions will also repeat within the area, so conversations with around ten centers can quickly reveal what belongs on the first screen.
Admission approval must still be handled by people. Under the 2026 Community Childcare Center Support Programme Guide (2026년 지역아동센터 지원사업 안내), guardians can apply year-round to their local city, county, or district government. The processing period is within seven days, but eligibility checks and center approval are required. The service must not describe itself as confirming admission.
Other countries have added on-the-ground confirmation to public data
Singapore’s LifeSG preschool search lets users find distance, fees, and age-specific vacancies within two kilometers of home or work. Guardians use it without a separate search fee, while final inquiries and enrollment happen directly with the facility.
Facilities update vacancy data monthly and can display availability from the current month through seven months ahead. The service does not treat the number on screen as a confirmed bookable place. Instead, facilities are expected to respond to inquiries within three to five business days.
The US state of Iowa launched Iowa Child Care Connect in 2024. Parents can search for care near home and along their commuting route, then narrow results by age, operating hours, care type, and whether subsidies are accepted.
This is not a paid product for parents. It is a state-level information network funded with public money. Iowa Department of Health and Human Services material states that it identifies 3,307 providers, including childcare facilities and home-based care, addressing both parent search and local supply visibility.
Locate: Child Care in the US state of Maryland is run by Maryland Family Network, a nonprofit organization, and includes school-age care. Families can use free guidance and search, while facilities submit vacancy and programme information to keep their records current.
Upfront, which handled data collection, said it emailed 5,484 facilities to request confirmation and found 1,625 vacancies that had not previously been captured. It did not create new centers; it created a short response channel through which centers could make previously hidden places visible.
Four things you can start in one area
1. A Mapo-gu school-route care finder
- This service shows community childcare centers that are convenient between home, school, and work, along with recently confirmed recruitment status.
- It is for guardians of younger elementary-school children who attend school in Mapo-gu while their guardian commutes to Yeouido or central Seoul.
- Address, capacity, and enrollment data already exist. You could start by confirming operating hours and return-home arrangements for around ten centers.
- Put a school input field and filters for “15-minute walk,” “school-break operation,” and “recent recruitment confirmation” on the first screen.
2. A Busanjin-gu center recruitment-status network
- This is a simple update service where centers select one of three statuses: recruiting now, waitlist open, or call to confirm.
- It is for social welfare workers and facility directors at community childcare centers in Busanjin-gu, Busan, who want to reduce repeated calls about vacancies.
- Public enrollment data does not show real-time vacancies, so centers need a low-effort way to add their current status.
- Show the center name and last confirmation date on the first screen, with the three status buttons prominently displayed.
3. A Taebaek school-break care-gap guide
- This service gathers differences between term-time and school-break operations, then guides users through nearby centers and alternative care contacts in order.
- It is for guardians of elementary-school children in Taebaek who work during school breaks but face changes to their child’s usual care schedule.
- In areas with a narrow practical travel range, distance, operating days, and the time a child can return home determine the real choice more than nationwide search does.
- Put fields for the school-break period and required care hours on the first screen, followed by a list of reachable centers.
4. An Andong center request-based support connection
- This service lets centers post needed goods or talent-based activities directly, and lets nearby residents and businesses apply to help.
- It is for Andong residents and neighborhood businesses that want to begin with school-break meal supplies or one-off activity support rather than regular donations.
- Center locations and operating organization types can create the initial list, but centers must confirm actual needs directly to prevent unwanted donations.
- Put “What centers requested this month,” a distance-sorted request list, and each center’s confirmation date on the first screen.
Call five Mapo-gu centers today
Choose five Mapo-gu centers from the public data and ask about current recruitment, waiting lists, school-break operations, return-home support, and willingness to respond to a weekly status check. If at least three say current enrollment alone cannot show whether care is available, and at least two agree to take part in short updates, you have grounds to test a Mapo-gu confirmation map before attempting a nationwide service.
Why this matters where you are
Korea’s local-government data, its community childcare center application process, and the center network described here are Korean conditions. In your own market, check whether public care-provider data includes capacity, enrollment, dates, and location, and whether providers can update a simple status without taking on booking administration. A small geographic pilot can show whether parents’ key questions are also about availability, hours, and the journey home.
