Using Korean Food and Drug Safety Data to Build a Local Safety-Check Service

By matching nationwide Korean food and drug safety data with a local business’s product and supplier lists, builders can create practical checking and alert tools for small operators.

Broader query options and changing addresses

On September 18, 2026, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (식품의약품안전처), Korea’s food and drug safety regulator, announced changes to six API services. APIs are connection points that let another service retrieve data automatically. The affected information is used in different settings, including food nutrition data, drug approvals, medical-device approvals and recalls, and imported-food approvals.

The changes make search filters and returned fields more detailed. Food nutrition data can now be searched by food-origin name, while imported foods can be searched within chosen start and end dates for processing dates and declaration dates.

Medical-device recall data will include recall reasons, and product-approval data will include the name of the contract manufacturer. Drug approval data will add searches by product standard code and start and end dates for data-protection periods. Active pharmaceutical ingredient data will include the medicines concerned.

The Public Data Portal (공공데이터포털), Korea’s government open-data portal, shows 8,964 cumulative use applications for drug product approval information and 7,585 for food nutrition information. These are not counts of live services, but more than 16,000 applications across those two datasets suggest that the address change could affect many users.

Test use is automatically approved, allows up to 10,000 queries per day, and is listed as free. A separate review is required to provide a service to end users. The public metadata for medical-device recall and sales-suspension information, and for drug product approval information, does not state a quantitative update cycle or exact update time. Showing the time of the last query is therefore safer.

Existing API addresses will remain available for only 90 days after the notice. If you already use this information, move to the new addresses before mid-December 2026 and check that new fields do not stop your search or storage process.

Where nationwide information becomes local work

Consider a hypothetical case: Kim runs a four-person business in Incheon that supplies imported snacks and sauces to neighborhood supermarkets. Kim does not need a giant search service for all imported foods in Korea. Kim needs a tool that can quickly check only the products handled that week.

Today, the business reads product names and importers from transaction statements, copies them into a spreadsheet, and searches food-related sites again for similar names. If it is difficult to narrow results to recently handled products by declaration date or processing date, staff must open several results and compare them one by one to determine whether they are the same product.

When a recall or sales-suspension notice appears, staff may also need to compare the product name with customer inventory. If spacing or translated names differ, and barcodes or production dates are missing, they may need to call the supplier again to confirm whether it is the affected product.

With the new search filters, Kim can first choose a review period and retrieve only imported foods processed or declared during that period. By attaching the company’s own product list, a small work screen could separate new products, unchecked products, and products that need human review.

Starting with every importer in Korea would create endless work in product-name cleanup and customer support. Narrowing the scope to businesses that supply Southeast Asian foods to neighborhood supermarkets in one district of Incheon makes it possible to inspect and correct the real transaction-statement formats and commonly confused product names.

Early customers could be reached by visiting a few existing business contacts rather than through online advertising. Within the 10,000-per-day test query limit, a builder could also test regularly retrieving and storing product lists, then showing stored results first when a user searches.

Human work still remains. Public information alone cannot reveal actual warehouse inventory, product lot numbers, Korean-language labels attached on site, or quantities already shipped to customers. A responsible staff member must make the final match decision and take recall action.

The same principle applies to restaurants, pharmacies, and medical-device sellers. Nationwide data becomes an operational tool when it is matched with a local business’s menu, product, or inventory list instead of being shown as-is.

Overseas services charge for delivery and verification

Canada’s recalls and safety alerts

The Government of Canada lets people search recalls and safety alerts, including food and medical devices, in one place. It also provides topic-based email alerts and reusable files. The public files are updated daily, allowing separate alert services for local retailers or healthcare providers to use them.

The source information and basic alerts are free. The opportunity for private services is in comparing notices with a specific store’s product list, assigning work to staff, and recording whether checks and actions are complete.

The European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed

The European Union’s Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed began in 1979. Its public search interface allows searches by hazard type, country of origin, country of distribution, and whether a product was rejected at the border. The European Commission says that more than 100 countries have access to the system.

However, commercial information such as brands or businesses may be limited in the public interface. Importers still need to connect their own supplier, product, and lot-number lists for the information to lead to an actual inventory check.

Nutrislice for US school meals

Nutrislice helps meal operators at US schools, hospitals, and similar facilities publish menus, nutrition information, and allergen information together across the web, apps, and display screens. When an operator organizes a menu once, users can check only the information needed for their school or facility.

A Dallas Independent School District case published by the company says that reflecting menus for more than 200 schools across several screens saved more than six hours a month. This is a company-published case and needs separate verification. Still, it is useful that the service first connected a school district’s actual menus and change process rather than starting with nationwide food information.

Four things to build first in one area

1. A pre-sale check sheet for imported foods

  • This service finds imported-food records by declaration date and processing date, matches them with transaction statements, and separately collects products that need more review.
  • It is for a small import and distribution company supplying Southeast Asian foods to supermarkets in one district of Incheon.
  • It can start now because expanded date filters make it easier to narrow a review to recently received products.
  • The first screen should include transaction-statement upload, review-period selection, and counts of matched, recheck, and unchecked products.

2. Nutrition menus for neighborhood restaurants

  • This service calculates nutrition information for each menu item using food nutrition data, then publishes information that the restaurant has finally confirmed to a customer-facing screen.
  • It is for a small cafe near a tourist destination in Jeju that sells packaged desserts but has not organized nutrition information separately.
  • Food-origin-name searches create room to reduce errors from selecting a similar but incorrect food item.
  • The first screen should include ingredient search, batch quantity, sales unit, and items that require restaurant confirmation.

This information alone must not be used to guarantee allergen safety. The restaurant must directly check the actual ingredient label and the possibility of mixing during preparation.

3. A local medical-device recall board

  • This service matches medical-device recall information with the holdings lists of hospitals and sellers, then records recall reasons and responsible staff actions.
  • It is for a small seller supplying medical devices and consumables to rehabilitation clinics and care facilities in Daegu.
  • Adding recall reasons to results makes it easier to explain which products need checking before others, rather than presenting a simple list.
  • The first screen should include product-name and model-name entry, matched recall records, the person responsible for checking, and a completion button.

4. Local drug product-information change alerts

  • This service uses drug product codes to find changes in approval information and update lists used by sales and product staff.
  • It is for a small pharmaceutical distributor that provides product information to clinics and pharmacies in Gwangju.
  • Added product-standard-code searches and data-protection-period fields make it easier to distinguish products with the same name and organize changes.
  • The first screen should include product-code-list upload, newly changed items, the last query time, and a button to view the original record.

This screen is a tool for organizing approval information. It does not replace prescribing or medication decisions. Pharmacists and medical professionals must make medical judgments.

Why this matters where you are

Korea’s changing API addresses, query limits, approval process, and public-data update metadata are Korean conditions, so they may not transfer directly to another market. What does transfer is the product pattern: check whether public recall, approval, or nutrition data can be matched to a local operator’s actual product list, then make the required human review visible. You can also check whether your local source data states its update timing and whether its public records omit the identifiers needed to confirm real inventory.

One thing to check in the next 30 minutes

Call one nearby imported-food distributor and ask where it checks the approval or recall status of recently received products, and how many times the same information is copied. If the person handling the work opens two or more places for one product, or copies information again into a spreadsheet or messenger, it may be worth building a first check screen with ten real products from that business.
